Google Calendar Dark Mode on Mac and Desktop
Turn on Google Calendar dark mode on Mac: Appearance → Dark, or Device default to follow macOS. Plus iPhone, Android, Dock web apps, and fixes.

Yes, Google Calendar has a built-in dark mode on Mac. Open calendar.google.com, click the gear icon, choose Appearance, pick Dark, and click Done. If you pick Device default instead, Google Calendar follows your Mac and switches between light and dark on its own. You do not need an extension or a hack anymore.
Google added the dark theme to Calendar on the web in October 2024, together with the Material Design 3 refresh, which is why so many older guides still tell you to install a browser extension. I build hora Calendar, a Google Calendar app for Mac, so I care about this more than most. The steps below follow Google’s and Apple’s own help pages, checked on 20 October 2026.
The short answer
- On a Mac or PC (web): gear icon → Appearance → Dark → Done.
- To follow macOS automatically: choose Device default in Google Calendar, then set System Settings → Appearance to Auto or Dark.
- On iPhone and iPad: there is no in-app switch. Google Calendar follows the system Dark Mode.
- On Android: Calendar app → Menu → Settings → General → Theme → Dark.
How to turn on dark mode in Google Calendar on the web
These steps work in Safari, Chrome, Firefox, and Edge on a Mac, and in any Dock web app you made from Google Calendar.
- Open calendar.google.com and sign in.
- Click the gear icon at the top right.
- Choose Appearance.
- Select Light, Dark, or Device default.
- Click Done.
Light and Dark stay fixed no matter what your Mac is doing. Device default follows the light or dark preference your browser reports, which on a Mac normally comes from System Settings. The steps match Google’s Use Dark theme in Calendar help page.
One trade-off surprises people. The same Appearance window has a color set option, Modern with white event text or Classic with black event text, but Google only lets you change it while the background is set to Light. With Dark or Device default selected, the color set is locked. Google explains this on its color set and density page. Density (Responsive, Comfortable, or Compact) is a separate choice and still works in dark mode.
Make Google Calendar follow your Mac’s dark mode automatically
If you want Google Calendar light during the day and dark in the evening, let macOS do the switching:
- In Google Calendar, set Appearance to Device default.
- On your Mac, open System Settings → Appearance.
- Choose Auto. Apple says Auto follows your Night Shift schedule, or sunrise and sunset if no schedule is set, and waits until the Mac has been idle for at least a minute before it switches.
- Prefer manual control? Choose Dark here, or use the Display section of Control Center to toggle Dark Mode.
Apple covers the options in Use a light or dark appearance on your Mac. If Google Calendar does not follow your Mac, the browser is usually the reason:
- Safari has no appearance setting of its own, so it passes your macOS choice straight through.
- Chrome has its own Appearance setting with Device, Light, and Dark. Set it to Device if you want Chrome to follow macOS. Google documents it in Browse in Dark mode.
- Firefox has a similar Website appearance setting in its general settings. Automatic follows your system.
Dark mode in a Google Calendar Dock web app
Many Mac users run Google Calendar as a Safari or Chrome web app with its own Dock icon. If you have not set one up yet, here is how to add Google Calendar to the Mac Dock. Dark mode works there exactly as it does in a tab: open the gear menu inside the web app and choose Appearance. A Safari web app keeps its own website data apart from Safari, so if the web app still looks light after you changed the setting in a Safari tab, check the Appearance choice inside the web app as well.
Google Calendar dark mode on iPhone, iPad, and Android
On iPhone and iPad, Google Calendar has no theme switch of its own. Turn on Dark Mode in Settings → Display & Brightness and the app follows it. Google says this needs iOS 13 or later; see its iPhone and iPad help.
On Android, the Calendar app has a real setting: open Calendar, tap Menu → Settings → General → Theme, and choose Dark. That needs Android 7 or later. The Calendar widget and notifications follow your Android system theme instead of the app setting, as explained in Google’s Android help.
Google Calendar still white? Check these
- Appearance is set to Light. Light always wins, even when the Mac is in Dark Mode. Switch to Dark or Device default.
- Device default, but your Mac or browser is light. Check System Settings → Appearance, then the browser setting above.
- An old dark mode extension is still on. Extensions that recolored the old Calendar can clash with the built-in theme. Google warned that the 2024 redesign might stop some extensions from working as expected. Turn the extension off and use Appearance instead.
- The color set option is greyed out. That is expected in Dark and Device default. Switch to Light if you need Classic or Modern.
- Your screen looks warm, not dark. That is Night Shift, which only shifts screen colors toward yellow. It does not change Google Calendar’s background.
- You use a work or school account. Google’s Workspace announcement says there is no admin control for this feature, so your admin cannot turn dark mode off for you.
Dark mode in a native Mac calendar
The web theme covers the Google Calendar website. If you would rather use Google Calendar in a Mac app, you have two common routes.
Apple Calendar. Add your Google account in System Settings → Internet Accounts and Apple’s built-in Calendar app shows your Google events. It follows your Mac’s appearance setting, so it goes dark whenever macOS does. Here is how to add Google Calendar to Apple Calendar, including the Google features you lose along the way.
A native Google Calendar client. This is the case I built hora Calendar for. It connects to your Google account through Google’s Calendar API and has its own Appearance setting with Auto, Light, and Dark, plus custom themes, so you can keep the calendar dark while the rest of the Mac stays light, or the other way around. Getting that switch right in SwiftUI took longer than I expected, and I wrote up how I fixed appearance switching.
Dark mode also changes how event colors read. A banana-yellow event that works on white can be hard to read on a dark background, and the reverse happens too. hora adjusts each Google Calendar color separately for light and dark backgrounds so event titles stay readable in both; the details are in my post on color contrast with OKLCH and APCA.
The honest limits: hora works only with Google Calendar, not iCloud or Exchange, and needs macOS 15 or later. The iPhone and iPad app launches on October 23, 2026, so until then it is a Mac-only choice. It costs $2.99 a month, $29.99 a year, or $59.99 once for Lifetime. The Direct download includes a 14-day free trial with no card; on the App Store the 14-day trial comes with the annual plan only. hora is independent and not affiliated with Google.
Google Calendar dark mode FAQ
Does Google Calendar have a dark mode?
Yes. Google Calendar on the web got a dark theme in October 2024. Open the gear menu, choose Appearance, and select Dark or Device default. The iPhone, iPad, and Android apps support dark mode too.
How do I make Google Calendar dark on a Mac?
Use the Appearance setting. In Google Calendar, click the gear icon, choose Appearance, select Dark, and click Done. To switch with your Mac instead, choose Device default and set System Settings → Appearance to Auto or Dark.
Can I use Google Calendar in dark mode while my Mac stays light?
Yes. Choose Dark rather than Device default in Google Calendar’s Appearance settings. Dark stays on regardless of your macOS setting.
Why can’t I change the color set in dark mode?
Google limits it to the light background. The Modern and Classic color sets can only be changed when Appearance is set to Light. With Dark or Device default selected, the option is locked.
Do I still need a dark mode extension for Google Calendar?
No. The built-in dark theme replaces extensions such as Chrome Web Store dark mode add-ons. If you still have one installed, turn it off, because it can clash with Google’s own theme.
Can my Google Workspace admin disable dark mode in Calendar?
No. Google’s announcement of the feature says there is no admin control for it. Each user picks Light, Dark, or Device default.
