Google Calendar Desktop Notifications on Mac
Get Google Calendar desktop notifications on a Mac: the three settings that must agree, notifications vs alerts, fixes, and how to get reminders without a tab.

Google Calendar can send desktop notifications on a Mac, but only while calendar.google.com is open in a browser tab or a Dock web app. Three settings have to agree: the notification setting inside Google Calendar, your browser’s permission for calendar.google.com, and the macOS permission for that browser. If any one of them is off, the reminder never reaches your screen.
Google does not make a native Google Calendar app for Mac, so there is no single app switch to flip. Below is the setup in the order I would check it, the difference between desktop notifications and alerts, a troubleshooting list, and two ways to get Mac reminders without keeping a tab open.
The short version
- In Google Calendar, open Settings → General → Notification settings and set Notifications to Desktop notifications.
- Allow calendar.google.com to show notifications in Safari or Chrome.
- In System Settings → Notifications, allow notifications from that browser (or from your Dock web app).
- Keep Google Calendar open. Closing the tab or quitting the browser stops the reminders.
Step 1: Turn on desktop notifications in Google Calendar
Open Google Calendar in your browser, click the gear icon, and choose Settings. Under General, open Notification settings. Use the Notifications menu to choose Desktop notifications if you want reminders to appear as regular Mac notifications.
The same section has a checkbox labelled Notify me only if I have responded “Yes” or “Maybe”. It cuts noise, but it also explains many missing reminders: an invitation you have not answered stays silent.
Reminder times are set separately. Each calendar you own has default event notifications under Settings for my calendars → your calendar → Event notifications, and each event can override them in its own Notifications field. Google covers both in its Calendar notifications help page.
Desktop notifications vs alerts: what is the difference?
Desktop notifications pop up outside the browser, as normal macOS notifications, while Google Calendar is open. Alerts appear inside the Google Calendar window, so you only see them when that window is in front of you. If your calendar lives in a background tab, desktop notifications are almost always the better choice. Google also notes that snoozing notifications works only in Chrome.
Do not confuse Google’s alerts with the macOS notification style. In System Settings, a Temporary notification disappears after a while, while a Persistent one stays until you dismiss it. Google desktop notifications combined with the Persistent style give you meeting reminders that wait for you.
Step 2: Allow calendar.google.com in your browser
The first time you turn on desktop notifications, the browser asks whether calendar.google.com may show notifications. If you clicked Block, or never saw the prompt, change it manually.
Safari
Choose Safari → Settings, open the Websites tab, and select Notifications in the sidebar. Find calendar.google.com and set it to Allow. If it is not listed, reload Google Calendar and switch desktop notifications off and on again to trigger the prompt.
Chrome
Open the three-dot menu → Settings → Privacy and security → Site settings → Notifications. Next to Allowed to send notifications, click Add and enter calendar.google.com. These are the steps Google gives in its own help page.
Step 3: Allow your browser in macOS Notifications
Website notifications travel through the browser, so macOS has to let the browser notify you. Open System Settings → Notifications, select Safari or Google Chrome, and turn on Allow notifications. Choose where they show up and whether they are Temporary or Persistent, and turn on sound if you want to hear meeting reminders. Apple lists every option in its Mac Notifications settings guide.
Then check Focus. If Do Not Disturb or another Focus is on in Control Center, browser notifications are held back unless that Focus allows the browser.
Using Google Calendar as a Dock web app?
A Safari or Chrome web app gives Google Calendar its own window and Dock icon. If you have not made one yet, here is how to add Google Calendar to the Mac Dock. Notifications work a little differently there.
A Safari web app shares no cookies or website data with Safari, so you sign in to Google again inside it and answer the notification prompt there, not in Safari. The web app then appears in System Settings → Notifications under its own name, and for sites that send notifications its Dock icon can show a red badge with the unread count. Apple’s Safari web apps guide explains the details. One rule still applies: the web app has to be open for reminders to arrive, so consider adding it as a login item so it opens when you log in.
Google Calendar notifications not working on Mac? Check these
- The tab or web app is closed. Google says Calendar must still be open in your browser. Quitting the browser at night means no morning reminders.
- Notifications are set to Off or Alerts. Alerts only show inside the Calendar window. Switch to Desktop notifications.
- The site is blocked in the browser. Recheck Step 2, including in each browser profile you use.
- macOS is not allowing the browser. Recheck Step 3, and look at Focus.
- The event has no reminder. Open it and look at its Notifications field, or set calendar defaults as in Step 1.
- You have not answered the invitation. With “Notify me only if I have responded Yes or Maybe” turned on, unanswered invites stay quiet.
- Your admin changed the event. On work or school accounts, Google notes that you do not get a notification when an admin edits events on your calendar.
If the event itself looks wrong on another device, the problem is sync rather than notifications. My guide to what actually syncs in Google Calendar helps separate the two.
How to get Mac reminders without keeping a tab open
Apple Calendar. Add your Google account to the built-in Calendar app and macOS shows event alerts without a browser. Alerts on the Mac work, but you lose Google’s email reminders for those events. Here is how to add Google Calendar to Apple Calendar.
A native Google Calendar client. This is why I built hora Calendar. It connects to your Google account through Google’s Calendar API and uses native macOS notifications and a menu bar countdown to your next meeting, with no browser tab involved. Allow hora in System Settings → Notifications, then test it with a low-stakes event before you rely on it. hora is independent and not affiliated with Google.
Whichever route you choose, pick one source of reminders. If the browser, Apple Calendar, and a Mac app all notify you, every meeting arrives three times and you start ignoring all of them.
FAQ
How do I get Google Calendar notifications on my Mac?
Turn on three settings. Set Google Calendar → Settings → Notification settings to Desktop notifications, allow calendar.google.com in your browser, and allow the browser in System Settings → Notifications. Keep Google Calendar open in a tab or Dock web app.
What is the difference between desktop notifications and alerts in Google Calendar?
Where they appear. Desktop notifications pop up outside the browser as system notifications. Alerts appear only inside the Google Calendar window. Both need Google Calendar to be open.
Do Google Calendar notifications work when the browser is closed?
No. Google’s help page says Calendar must still be open in your browser. For reminders without a tab, use Apple Calendar with your Google account or a native Mac client such as hora.
Why are my Google Calendar notifications not working on Mac?
Usually one blocked permission. Check that Calendar is open, that notifications are set to Desktop notifications, that calendar.google.com is allowed in the browser, that the browser is allowed in macOS, and that a Focus is not silencing it.
Can a Google Calendar Dock web app send notifications?
Yes, while it is open. In a Safari web app, sign in and allow notifications inside the web app itself. It then shows up in System Settings → Notifications under its own name.
If you keep Google Calendar open all day just so reminders work, try hora Calendar with your existing account and see whether native notifications fit your day better.
