Itsycal for Mac: Still Enough in 2026?

Itsycal is a free Mac menu bar calendar. See how Google syncs via Apple Calendar, the limits, and when a full app like hora fits better.

Itsycal menu bar calendar open on macOS, showing the October 2026 month grid with event dots and today's agenda below

Itsycal is a free, tiny menu bar calendar for Mac. Click the date in the menu bar and you get a compact month view plus an agenda of events already on your Mac. For a quick glance at today and tomorrow, it is still one of the best lightweight options in 2026.

It is enough when you mostly need to peek at the week without opening a full calendar window. It is not enough when you live in Google Calendar all day, need Google Tasks, rooms, Focus Time, or a real day/week editor, or when Apple Calendar’s CalDAV-style sync feels too slow or incomplete.

I build hora Calendar, a native Google Calendar app for Mac, so I am not neutral. The Itsycal details below come from mowglii.com/itsycal, its help page, and the open-source repo, checked on 15 October 2026. Where I talk about hora, I say so.

The short answer

  • Keep Itsycal if you want a free menu bar calendar that shows events from Mac Calendar, with keyboard navigation, ISO week numbers, and almost no UI noise.
  • Add a full Mac calendar if you edit schedules all day, juggle multiple views, or need features Google only exposes through its own API (Tasks, rooms, Focus Time, find-a-time).
  • Try hora if Google Calendar is your only calendar and you want a native Mac client that talks to Google directly instead of through Apple Calendar.

I already covered desktop widgets and a brief menu bar glance in calendar widgets for Mac. This post is Itsycal-first: what the product does well, how Google gets in, and when a menu bar stops being enough.

What Itsycal does well

Itsycal’s job is small on purpose. It sits in the menu bar, replaces or augments the system clock if you want, and opens a clean calendar without launching Apple Calendar.

  • Tiny and free. No account, no paid tier, MIT-licensed source on GitHub. You can read what it does.
  • Mac Calendar integration. It reads calendars you already set up in Apple’s Calendar app (EventKit), and you can create and delete events from Itsycal. Editing existing events is left to a fuller app.
  • Virtual meetings. Join links from the agenda when your events carry them.
  • Keyboard-first navigation. Vim-style motions, jump to a date, pin the panel open, and a configurable shortcut to open Itsycal.
  • Customization that stays out of the way. Dark mode, ISO week numbers, up to two months at a time, multiple font sizes, and a highly configurable menu bar clock.

Itsycal’s calendar button can also open BusyCal or Fantastical if you set one of those as your Mac’s default calendar app. That is useful when Itsycal is the glance and another app is the editor.

How Itsycal gets Google Calendar (and where that breaks)

Itsycal does not sign in to Google. There is no Google OAuth screen inside the app. Google (and Exchange) calendars only appear after macOS has them.

The path looks like this:

  1. Add the Google account in System Settings → Internet Accounts (or through Apple Calendar), and turn on Calendars.
  2. Confirm the calendars show up in Apple Calendar.
  3. In Itsycal Settings → General, tick the calendars you want tracked.

Shared or delegate Google calendars may not appear until you select them in Google Calendar Sync Settings (calendar.google.com/calendar/syncselect). Itsycal’s help page documents this workaround for Google delegates; other providers’ delegates are not shown directly.

Where this breaks for Google-heavy users:

  • No native Google features. Google Tasks, Workspace rooms, Focus Time, working locations, and find-a-time are not Itsycal features. They live in Google’s product surface, not in EventKit’s menu bar view.
  • Sync is Apple’s job. Delays, missing shared calendars, or odd defaults usually come from macOS Calendar / Internet Accounts, not from a bug unique to Itsycal.
  • Not a full day or week editor. You get a compact month and agenda. Dragging blocks across a week, managing complex series, or living in a multi-day grid still means opening Apple Calendar, BusyCal, Fantastical, hora, or the browser.

If your whole workflow is Google Calendar on the desktop, I mapped the browser, PWA, and native options in Google Calendar desktop app for Mac.

Itsycal vs a full Mac calendar

Here is the honest split between a menu bar glance, a multi-account full calendar (BusyCal or Fantastical), and a Google-only native client (hora).

When Itsycal is enough

Keep Itsycal as your daily driver when most of these are true:

  • You open the calendar to check what is next, not to rebuild the week.
  • Apple Calendar already syncs the accounts you care about, and shared Google calendars show up after syncselect if needed.
  • Creating a quick event from the menu bar is enough; deeper edits happen rarely in Apple Calendar or the browser.
  • You like free, open-source, and a UI that stays tiny.
  • You already use BusyCal or Fantastical as the full editor and only want Itsycal for the glance (its button can hand off to those apps).

When you need more than a menu bar

Graduate from Itsycal when the menu bar becomes a bottleneck:

  • You spend hours in day or week view, dragging meetings and juggling attendees.
  • You rely on Google Tasks, room booking, Focus Time, working locations, or find-a-time.
  • Shared calendars keep disappearing, or sync lag through Apple Calendar costs you real mistakes.
  • You want native macOS notifications tuned for a Google-heavy day, not just a popover agenda.
  • You need one app that is the editor and the glance — not a two-app stack.

Full apps such as Fantastical and BusyCal usually include their own menu bar or mini calendar views as part of the paid product. That is a different trade: you pay for depth, and the menu bar is a bonus, not the whole product.

Where hora fits

hora Calendar is what I built for people whose calendar is Google Calendar. It is a native SwiftUI Mac app that talks to the Google Calendar API directly — not through CalDAV or Apple Calendar. Multiple Google accounts, Google Tasks, Workspace rooms, find-a-time, working locations, Focus Time, out-of-office, Meet/Zoom/Teams links, native notifications, and a menu bar that shows your next event.

Pricing on horacal.app/pricing: $2.99 a month, $29.99 a year, or $59.99 Lifetime, after a 7-day free trial. macOS 15 or later.

Honest limits: no iCloud, Exchange, or CalDAV; no iPhone app; no booking-link page. If you need those, BusyCal or Fantastical is the better fit. If you only wanted a free menu bar glance and Apple Calendar sync is fine, Itsycal stays the smarter (and free) choice.

Itsycal and menu bar calendar FAQ

What is Itsycal for Mac?

Itsycal is a free tiny menu bar calendar for Mac. It shows a compact month and agenda from calendars already in Apple Calendar, with keyboard navigation, ISO week numbers, and optional clock customization. Source is MIT-licensed on GitHub.

Does Itsycal work with Google Calendar?

Yes, but only through Apple Calendar. Add Google in System Settings → Internet Accounts, confirm calendars in Apple Calendar, then tick them in Itsycal. Shared Google calendars may need calendar.google.com/calendar/syncselect first. Itsycal does not sign in to Google directly.

Is Itsycal still free in 2026?

Yes. The official site offers free downloads and lists no paid tier. The project remains MIT open source on GitHub.

What is the best menu bar calendar for Mac?

Itsycal is still the default free answer for a tiny glance. If you need a full editor plus a mini menu bar view, Fantastical or BusyCal include that as part of a paid app. If Google Calendar is your only calendar and you want a native Mac client, try hora.

When should I replace Itsycal with a full calendar app?

When the menu bar is no longer enough for how you work. Switch when you live in day/week editing, need Google Tasks/rooms/Focus Time, or Apple Calendar sync is too slow or incomplete for shared calendars.

What is a good Itsycal alternative for Google Calendar on Mac?

If you only need a free glance, keep Itsycal. If you want a full native Google Calendar Mac app (API, not CalDAV), hora is built for that. Multi-account suites like Fantastical and BusyCal also support Google alongside other providers.

If Google Calendar is your only calendar and the menu bar is no longer enough, try hora Calendar free for 7 days. If Itsycal still covers your day, keep it — free and tiny is a feature.
