Best Menu Bar Calendar Apps for Mac in 2026
Itsycal, Dot, Calendr, Sindresorhus Menu Bar Calendar and hora compared for Mac. Prices and Google Calendar sync checked 5 November 2026.

The best menu bar calendar for Mac depends on what you need from that click. Itsycal if you want a free glance that rides on Apple Calendar. Dot if the menu bar should be your main calendar, with meeting join and a one-time licence. Calendr if you want a free open-source menu bar with natural-language event entry. Sindresorhus Menu Bar Calendar if you only need a month grid, not your events. hora Calendar if Google Calendar is your only calendar and you want a full native Mac app with a menu bar that shows what is next.
I build hora, so I am not neutral. Prices and feature claims below come from each vendor site or App Store listing as checked on 5 November 2026 (Europe/Warsaw). I note where hora is the wrong pick.
Quick picks
- Free menu bar glance: Itsycal, or Calendr if you prefer open source.
- Month grid only, no events: Sindresorhus Menu Bar Calendar (free).
- Menu-bar-first paid calendar: Dot ($14.99 one-time; $9.99 with code LAUNCH as of this check).
- Google Calendar as a full Mac app, with menu bar: hora ($2.99/month, $29.99/year, or $59.99 Lifetime; 14-day Direct trial).
Why put a calendar in the menu bar?
A menu bar calendar answers one job: what is next, without opening a window that covers your work. That is different from a Notification Center widget (see calendar widgets for Mac) and different from a full desktop client. Some people only need the glance. Others end up living in the popover.
If Google Calendar is where your week lives, the bigger question is whether the menu bar app talks to Google directly or only through Apple Calendar. That split is why this roundup exists alongside how to use Google Calendar on a Mac.

1. Itsycal: the free classic
Itsycal is a tiny menu bar calendar from Mowglii. It integrates with the Mac Calendar app, can create and show events, view and complete Reminders, join virtual meetings, show ISO week numbers, and replace the system clock in the menu bar. Downloads on the site cover the latest build for macOS 27+ and an older line for macOS 11+. As of this check the current line is version 0.28.0.
Because it reads Apple Calendar, Google events only appear if you already added Google in System Settings → Internet Accounts. That path inherits Apple Calendar's Google limits. More in Itsycal for Mac: still enough in 2026?.
Pick it if you want free and small. Skip it if you need Google-specific types (focus time, working location, out of office) that Apple Calendar does not surface the same way.
Site: mowglii.com/itsycal.
2. Calendr: free, open source, still active
Calendr is a free MIT-licensed menu bar calendar for macOS (AppKit / SwiftUI / RxSwift), with about 2.4k GitHub stars as of this check. Latest release on GitHub was v1.26.2 on 30 October 2026. It supports natural-language event entry (for example "Pickleball with Tom next Friday from 10 to 12 /sport"), multiple timezones in the menu bar, and a URL scheme to open a date. Install via GitHub release or Homebrew cask.
Like Itsycal, it is a menu bar companion to macOS calendars, not a direct Google Calendar API client. If you like free and open source and you already keep accounts in Apple Calendar, it is a strong alternative to Itsycal.
Pick it if you want MIT source and natural language without paying. Skip it if you refuse to use Apple Calendar as the sync layer for Google.

3. Sindresorhus Menu Bar Calendar: month grid, nothing else
Sindre Sorhus's Menu Bar Calendar is the free App Store listing titled "Menu Bar Calendar" (id 1558360383). Same product, same page on sindresorhus.com. Click the icon for a monthly calendar. Click a date to open it in the Calendar app or Google Calendar; right-click to create an event. It does not show your events in the popover. The FAQ says that is intentional; his Today (free) and Dato (paid) apps cover events.
The App Store build requires macOS 26.0 or later. Older builds for macOS 15, 14 and 13 are linked from the product page. Free, no data collected per the developer site.
Pick it if you only need "what day is the 17th". Skip it if you expected an agenda in the menu bar.

4. Dot: menu-bar-first, one-time purchase
Dot (trydot.app) is a menu-bar-only Mac calendar. MacStories reviewed it as a daily driver: month view, event list, world clocks, natural-language create, and one-click join for Zoom, Google Meet, Teams and Webex. Official site: SwiftUI, macOS 13+, Apple Silicon and Intel, 14-day free trial with no card.
Pricing on 5 November 2026: $14.99 one-time, or $9.99 with code LAUNCH (launch special; confirm at checkout). Dot reads calendars from macOS Calendar, so Google, iCloud, Outlook and Exchange appear after you add them in Internet Accounts. It does not upload your calendar database to a Dot server, per the FAQ. Invitees have a macOS limitation for third-party apps: create in Dot, then add guests in Apple Calendar or the provider.
Pick it if the menu bar should replace your main calendar window and you are fine with EventKit. Skip it if you need a full week view app or direct Google API features. MacStories review: Dot: The Menu Bar Calendar That's Become My Main Calendar.

5. hora Calendar: Google Calendar, plus a menu bar
hora is a native SwiftUI calendar that syncs with Google Calendar over the Google Calendar API, not through EventKit. The Mac app includes week, month and day views, Google Meet join, focus time and working location (Workspace where required), Google Tasks, and a menu bar widget that shows your next upcoming event and lets you join the meeting from there.
Pricing from horacal.app/pricing: $2.99/month, $29.99/year, or $59.99 Lifetime. Direct download has a 14-day trial with no card. Every plan unlocks Mac, iPhone and iPad. The app UI is localized into 18 languages. Also on Setapp. Requires macOS 15+.
Pick it if Google is your only calendar and you want both a real desktop calendar and a menu bar glance. Skip it if you need iCloud or Exchange in the same window, or you only want a free popover.
6. BusyCal: full calendar with a menu bar companion
BusyCal is not a menu-bar-only app, but BusyMac documents a menu bar extension: navigable mini-calendar, heat map, event list and notifications. Direct licence $49.99 USD with a 14-day trial, also on Setapp. Worth knowing if you already pay for a multi-account suite and only wanted a better glance. Alternatives compared in BusyCal alternatives for Mac.
I did not verify a Fantastical Mac menu bar mini window on Flexibits' marketing page for this check (they heavily promote widgets), so I am not ranking Fantastical as a menu bar calendar here.
Google Calendar sync: EventKit vs direct API
Itsycal, Calendr and Dot read the macOS calendar store. Google shows up only after Internet Accounts sync, with the gaps Apple documents for Google in Calendar.app. Sindresorhus Menu Bar Calendar does not show events at all; a click can open Google Calendar in the browser.
hora talks to Google Calendar directly. That is why Google-only features behave closer to the web app, and why hora does not show iCloud calendars. If your week is Google-only, that trade is usually the right one. If you mix iCloud and Google every day, Dot or BusyCal fit better than hora.
Which menu bar calendar should you pick?
- Free glance on Apple Calendar: Itsycal or Calendr.
- Month only, no agenda: Sindresorhus Menu Bar Calendar.
- Pay once, live in the menu bar, mixed accounts: Dot.
- Google Calendar only, full native Mac app: hora.
- Already in a multi-provider suite: BusyCal's menu bar, or stay where you are.
