The best BusyCal alternative depends on why you are leaving. Fantastical if you want team scheduling and one subscription across Mac, iPhone and Windows. hora Calendar if Google Calendar is your only calendar and you want it to feel native on the Mac. Apple Calendar if you want to stop paying altogether. Notion Calendar, Itsycal and Morgen cover narrower cases, explained below.

I build hora, so I am not neutral. Prices below come from each vendor's pricing page or App Store listing as checked on 22 October 2026, and I note where hora is the wrong pick. If you are still deciding between the two big names, start with BusyCal vs Fantastical.

Why people look for a BusyCal alternative

BusyCal is a capable app: a $49.99 one-time licence from BusyMac with 18 months of updates, support for iCloud, Google, Microsoft 365, Exchange and CalDAV, and more settings than almost any other Mac calendar. The reasons people leave are usually one of these four.

  • Too many settings. Deep customisation is the point of BusyCal, and it is also what overwhelms people who just want their week on screen.
  • Update renewals. After 18 months you keep the last covered version or renew for another 18 months at a 20 to 40 percent discount on the $49.99 price. The Mac App Store version is a subscription at $4.99 a month or $39.99 a year.
  • Mac-first scheduling. BusyCal now has booking pages, but Fantastical's Openings also work on Windows and support multiple hosts on team plans.
  • Google is the only calendar. If you never touch iCloud or Exchange, a multi-provider suite gives you a lot of machinery for accounts you do not have.

1. Fantastical: the closest like-for-like switch

Fantastical is the app BusyCal users compare against first, because it covers the same accounts: iCloud, Google, Exchange, Microsoft 365, CalDAV and more. Its strengths are Openings, its booking links with multiple hosts on team plans, calendar sets that switch by time or location, and one plan that runs on Mac, iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch and Windows. The trade is the price model. There is a permanent free tier, but the useful features need Flexibits Premium at $6.99 a month or $56.99 a year. I broke that down in Fantastical pricing in 2026.

Pick it if you schedule calls with people outside your company or you also need a Windows PC. Skip it if subscriptions are why you liked BusyCal in the first place.

2. hora Calendar: if Google Calendar is all you use

hora is a native SwiftUI Mac app that talks to Google Calendar directly rather than through a generic sync layer. That is why Google-specific things like focus time, working location, out of office, Google Tasks and meeting rooms behave the way they do on the web. Calendar data is cached locally and OAuth tokens live in the macOS Keychain.

It is the cheapest paid native option here at $29.99 a year, and if you left BusyCal over update renewals, there is a $59.99 Lifetime plan that includes all future features and updates. From 23 October 2026 every plan also unlocks the iPhone and iPad app. The Direct download has a 14-day trial with no card.

Skip it if you need iCloud or Exchange calendars in the same window, or you are on macOS 14 or earlier. hora needs macOS 15 and only does Google, on purpose.

3. Apple Calendar: the free fallback

Apple Calendar is already on your Mac and connects iCloud, Google and Exchange through Internet Accounts. For a few events a day it is genuinely enough. With Google accounts, Google documents some gaps: no event email notifications, no creating new Google calendars, and no Room Scheduler. If you never used BusyCal's power features, this is the honest answer and it costs nothing.

4. Notion Calendar: free, if you live in Notion

Notion Calendar is free, connects Google, Outlook and iCloud-synced calendars, and links events to Notion pages. The Mac app is built on Electron rather than native frameworks, and your data sits on Notion's servers rather than only on your device. If that is close but not quite right, see Notion Calendar alternatives.

5. Itsycal: if you only used BusyCal's menu bar

Itsycal is a free, open-source menu bar calendar that shows your month and next events. It is a companion to Apple Calendar, not a client of its own, so it shows whatever accounts macOS Calendar already holds and inherits the same Google gaps. More in Itsycal for Mac: still enough in 2026?

6. Morgen: if tasks and scheduling matter more than views

Morgen runs on Mac, Windows, Linux, iOS, Android and the web, and pulls calendars and task tools into one planner. It is $15 a month billed yearly or $30 monthly, with no free plan, only a 14-day trial. That is a different price tier from BusyCal, and it only makes sense if planning your day around tasks is a real part of your job.

Already on Setapp? Check before you buy

Setapp, which starts at $14.99 a month, includes both BusyCal and hora. If you already subscribe, you can try hora at no extra cost before deciding anything. If you do not, a Setapp subscription just for a calendar app is poor value.

Which BusyCal alternative should you pick?

  • Calendars in Google, iCloud and Exchange: Fantastical, or stay with BusyCal.
  • Google Calendar only: hora.
  • Want to pay nothing: Apple Calendar, plus Itsycal for the menu bar.
  • Work runs in Notion: Notion Calendar.
  • Tasks and calendars on every platform: Morgen.
