Notion Calendar vs Google Calendar: Which to Use?

Notion Calendar vs Google Calendar: price, platforms, Notion and Google Tasks support, mobile limits, and which one fits how you work.

hora blog hero, dark: Notion Calendar and Google Calendar app icons on either side of a large vs, plus hora as a native option

Notion Calendar is not a replacement for Google Calendar. It is a different app on top of it. Your events still live in Google Calendar, and Notion Calendar shows them in a faster, keyboard-driven interface next to your Notion pages and databases. So the real choice is which window you open every day: Google Calendar in a browser, or Notion Calendar as a separate app.

Short version: stay with Google Calendar if you want the full feature set, Google Tasks, and nothing extra to install. Pick Notion Calendar if your work already lives in Notion and you want meeting notes and project dates next to your events. Both are free. If what you really want is Google Calendar as a proper Mac app, there is a third option at the end.

I build hora Calendar, a Mac app that works with Google Calendar, so I am not neutral. Notion Calendar details below come from Notion’s own help pages, checked on 29 October 2026.

Notion Calendar vs Google Calendar at a glance

  • Price: both free. Notion Calendar is included in Notion’s Free plan; Google Calendar is free with any Google account.
  • Where your events live: in Google Calendar either way. Notion Calendar reads and writes to your Google account; it also connects iCloud and Microsoft Outlook calendars.
  • Platforms: Google Calendar runs in the browser and has apps for iPhone and Android. Notion Calendar has apps for Mac, Windows, iOS and Android, plus the web.
  • Notion integration: only Notion Calendar. Any Notion database with a date property can show up on your calendar.
  • Google Tasks: shown in Google Calendar. Notion Calendar is built around Notion databases for tasks instead.
  • Scheduling links: both. Notion Calendar has one-off and recurring links; Google Calendar has appointment schedules, with some extras tied to paid Google plans.
  • Menu bar on Mac: only Notion Calendar. Google Calendar has no Mac app at all.

What Notion Calendar actually is

Notion Calendar started life as Cron, which Notion bought and renamed. It needs a Notion account; if you do not have one, Notion creates it with the same email when you sign up, according to the account help page. You then connect at least one calendar account: Google, iCloud (with an app-specific password), or Microsoft Outlook.

The draw is context. You can attach a Notion page to a meeting, see project deadlines from a Notion database next to your events, and drag a database item to change its date. On the desktop you also get a command menu, keyboard shortcuts, a menu bar list of upcoming events with a join button, and scheduling links you can share without a separate booking tool.

Where Google Calendar is still better

  • Nothing new to trust. No second account and no extra app with access to your calendar. For some Google Workspace companies, that alone decides it, because admins can block third-party calendar apps.
  • Google Tasks. Tasks from Gmail and Google Docs show up right in Google Calendar.
  • Full feature set first. New Google Calendar features land in Google’s own apps first. A third-party app has to catch up.
  • Mobile is complete. Notion lists real limits for its mobile app on the apps help page: one, two or three-day views only, no event search, and editing only for events you created on iOS as the organizer.
  • Lots of calendars. Notion’s calendar help page notes that performance can suffer past five connected calendars.

Where Notion Calendar is better

  • A real desktop app. It runs outside your browser on Mac and Windows, with its own window, notifications and menu bar.
  • Notion pages and databases. Meeting notes, project timelines and deadlines sit next to your events.
  • Speed for keyboard people. A command menu and shortcuts make creating and moving events fast.
  • Several providers in one view. Google, iCloud and Outlook together, while Google Calendar on the web can only add other calendars by subscription link.
  • Booking links without extra tools. One-off and recurring scheduling links, with a booking window and an option to avoid conflicts.

Which one should you use?

Choose Google Calendar if you mainly need to see and edit your events, you use Google Tasks, or your company is strict about third-party apps. It is the safe default with the fewest moving parts.

Choose Notion Calendar if your notes, projects and tasks already live in Notion. That is the one thing no other calendar does as well. If you do not use Notion, most of its advantage disappears, and our Notion Calendar alternatives guide covers what else to try.

Choose neither if the real problem is that Google Calendar lives in a browser tab on your Mac. Then you want a desktop app for Google Calendar, not a different system. I compared 5 ways to use Google Calendar on a Mac for exactly that case.

A third option: a native Mac app for Google Calendar

That last case is why I built hora Calendar. It is a native Mac app that works with Google Calendar and talks to it directly through the official Google Calendar API, with no extra account and no sync server holding a copy of your calendar. You get Day, Week and Month views, multiple Google accounts, Google Tasks, a menu bar view, native notifications with a join button for Google Meet, Zoom and Teams, and Google Calendar-style keyboard shortcuts.

What hora does not do: it has no Notion integration, it works only with Google Calendar (not iCloud or Outlook), it is not on Windows, and it needs macOS 15 or later. It costs $2.99/month, $29.99/year, or $59.99 Lifetime. hora is independent and not affiliated with Google or Notion.

Notion Calendar vs Google Calendar FAQ

Is Notion Calendar free?

Yes. Notion Calendar is included in Notion’s Free plan, so you can use it with a free Notion account and your existing Google Calendar.

Does Notion Calendar replace Google Calendar?

No. It is an app on top of your calendar accounts. Your events stay in Google Calendar, and changes you make in Notion Calendar sync back to Google.

Can I use Notion Calendar without Notion?

Partly. You need a Notion account, but Notion creates one for you when you sign up. You can use the calendar without ever opening Notion, though you lose the main reason to choose it.

Does Notion Calendar work with Outlook and iCloud?

Yes. Notion Calendar connects Google, iCloud and Microsoft Outlook calendars. iCloud needs an app-specific password from your Apple account.

Is there a Google Calendar app for Mac?

Not from Google. Google Calendar on a Mac runs in the browser. For a desktop app, use Apple Calendar, Notion Calendar, or a native app that works with Google Calendar, such as hora.

Does Notion Calendar show Google Tasks?

Not as Google Calendar does. Notion Calendar is built around Notion databases for tasks. If you rely on Google Tasks, Google Calendar itself or an app with Google Tasks support is a better fit.
